Montana Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

The State of Montana, through the Department of Public Health and Human Services, offers two programs aimed at helping eligible Montanans.

  • The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) pays part of winter energy bills and may be able to assist with furnace emergencies for eligible people.

  • The Weatherization Assistance Program helps participants to improve the heating efficiency of their homes and thus reduce their energy consumption.

When Can I Apply?

You may apply for LIHEAP during the heating season, which is October 1 through April 30 of each year, by contacting the local eligibility office or Tribal LIHEAP office serving your community.

You may apply Weatherization assistance at any time during the year.

Who is Eligible?

Eligibility for assistance is based on your income and resource limits. Both homeowners and renters may apply for these programs.

If your household receives benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, you may qualify automatically for assistance.

Benchmark Human Services

Benchmark Human Services (Benchmark) was recently awarded a contract from the State of Montana to expand Part C Early Intervention Services in Montana. Benchmark has been providing early intervention services for nearly 30 years and currently provides these services in Colorado, Connecticut, Missouri, Montana, and Virginia. The organization has served children and families in Montana since 2018 in Great Falls and the surrounding communities. The new contract, awarded through a competitive RFP process, expands the organization’s service region to include the following counties: Cascade, Teton, Choteau, Pondera, Hill, Blaine, Liberty, Toole, Glacier, Flathead, Lincoln, Lake, Sanders, Mineral, Missoula, Ravalli, and Granite Counties.

Part C services include speech, physical, and occupational therapies for children birth to three who have a disability or developmental delay. Services are provided in the child’s natural environments such as at home, in childcare facilities, and in the community.  “We are excited to serve more children and families in Montana,” said Angie Heller, Regional Director of Early Intervention Services for Benchmark. “Benchmark has a long history of helping children reach their full potential and we’re eager to expand that work to the Missoula and Kalispell communities."
